Columbus Dispatch Endorses Justices Stratton & O'Connor

For Ohio Supreme Court: Evelyn Lundberg Stratton and Maureen O'Connor

Incumbents Stratton and O'Connor have performed well on state's highest court
Sunday, September 28, 2008 3:42 AM

For justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, The Dispatch endorses Republican incumbents Evelyn Lundberg Stratton and Maureen O'Connor in the Nov. 4 election.

Their combined legal and public-service experience is an asset that should be preserved on the court.

• Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton's public-sector career began as a judge on the Franklin County Common Pleas Court from 1989 through March 1996, when she was appointed by Gov. George V. Voinovich to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Craig Wright. She was elected to a full term in November 1996 and has served since.

As a trial-court judge, Stratton became aware of how mental illness is often a factor in crime. This impelled her to educate herself on the issue and to champion the development of special courts to handle such cases, putting such offenders into programs that could help keep them out of jail. Thanks to her efforts, as of June, 28 counties in Ohio had mental-health courts and several more counties were planning to adopt them. Stratton is a national authority on the issue.

• Justice Maureen O'Connor became a magistrate for the Summit County Probate Court in 1985, where she served for eight years before being elected as a Summit County Common Pleas Court judge. She's pro-law-enforcement, having served in the mid-1990s as Summit County prosecutor and then taking over in 1999 as lieutenant governor and director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety under Gov. Bob Taft. She was elected to the Ohio Supreme Court in 2002.

She's been working on a court-security task force. Currently, the 88 county courthouses run the gamut of security configurations and rules, and sometimes courts share their buildings with other offices. The task force educates county court personnel about security issues and makes on-site visits to provide recommendations.

Overall, both justices have demonstrated the judicial restraint that should characterize members of a state's high court -- with two notable exceptions.

The first was a 7-0 ruling in 2005 that sealed the addresses of public employees -- information that previously had been public. These addresses had frequently helped in investigations of malfeasance by public employees. There was no compelling justification for closing the records.

The second was a 2006 ruling granting the governor the power to withhold from the public his written communications with his lieutenants. Neither the Ohio Constitution nor the legislature gives the governor such a right to shield the functions of his office.

The Dispatch hopes that these rulings are anomalies and that both justices will defend public access to the operations of government in future decisions.

The Dispatch urges voters to retain both Stratton and O'Connor on the high court.

Franklin County : 2008 PGA Memorial Golf Tournament

Dublin, OH, May 31, 2008. Each year the best golfers in the world come to Dublin, OH in May to play in The PGA Memorial Golf Tournament. The largest gathering of Circuit Riders for Stratton so far, some 18 Ohioans wearing the now famous white, orange and black Circuit Riders for Stratton shirts, came to Dublin, too, this year.

Justice Stratton and her Circuit Riders came to say thanks to all Central Ohio Stratton for Supreme Court volunteers who were invited to a special volunteer appreciation party at the home of Pete & Donna Miller in Muirfield Village.

Unlike previous events, morning showers and thunderstorms gave way to perfect afternoon weather. While the Snoopy blimp buzzed over head sending live TV images of the tournament to millions of fans around the world, Justice Stratton, her Circuit Riders and campaign volunteers discussed plans for the exciting re-election campaign ahead.

The golfing world will forever remember that Kenny Perry won the 2008 Memorial at Muirfield that day. We will always remember Justice Evelyn L. Stratton, just a few hundred feet away from Muirfield’s 18th green, saying thanks to her volunteers all over Ohio as the long, but exciting, road to victory in November began.

Circuit Riders for Stratton

This year marks the 205th anniversary of The
Ohio Supreme Court.

History books and court records tell us that the very first Ohio justices "road the circuit," traveling thousands of miles on horseback each year to hold court in every Ohio county. These judicial pioneers braved primitive and often dangerous conditions to lay the foundation for our legal system.

Although it's been just over two centuries since our justices rode the circuit, Justice Evelyn L. Stratton is presently crisscrossing the state in an effort to meet as many voters as possible. Two of her campaign volunteers from Franklin County, Pete & Donna Miller, have decided to join the effort by forming "Circuit Riders for Stratton".

Circuit Riders for Stratton will ride to all 88 Ohio counties by Election Day in honor of Ohio's earliest justices and in support of the re-election of Ohio Supreme Court Justice Evelyn L. Stratton. These 21st century Circuit Riders will have plenty of horse power!

A core group will leave Columbus and join up with local bikers and biking groups throughout Ohio. CRFS will visit every county and attend local events whenever possible.

You can join Circuit Riders for Stratton, track their progress and catalog their adventures right here on the Circuit Riders For Stratton Blog.

All bikers are welcome!
